When a wrestling stadium is converted into a world class stage; when a 300-member crew and a convoy of 50 trucks carrying specially designed Mughal-era sets and props make their way to the capital; and when trained Kathak dancers auditioned & selected from across the country come together – then it truly must be a celebration. That celebration is Mughal e Azam The Musical.
The epic saga premiered in the capital today at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium to a packed house filled with theatre afficiandos and imminent personalities from the arts, film world, industry captains and political leadership. This musical theatre production directed by acclaimed director Feroz Abbas Khan and produced by Shapoorji Pallonji & the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) travels to the capital of the country after four hugely successful seasons in Mumbai.
“I am paying a tribute to the timeless classic with all its beauty, splendour, scale, colours and audacity,” says director Feroz Abbas Khan.
Mughal e Azam remains Bollywood’s most expensive film till date and the original producers Shapoorji Pallonji maintain the same outlook. “We have looked upon Mughal-e-Azam as a work of art, be it the original film, its colour version and now the play. Our vision for Mughal-e-Azam has always been that the creative expression should not be constrained either by imagination or by budgets.”
NCPA Chairman adds, “The justly famous movie Mughal-e-Azam was a legend in its time and it has been seamlessly moved into a classic. Its popularity has convinced us that more and more audiences must experience this everlasting love story of Mughal Prince Salim & Anarkali.”
Touted as the biggest theatre production in India, Mughal e Azam with its elaborate Mughal-era costumes by Manish Malhotra, live singing by the actors of classics like “Jab Pyar Kiya Tu Darna Kya” to “Mohe Panghat” and stunning choreography by internationally acclaimed choreographer Mayuri Upadhya guarantees to mesmerise Delhi wallahs.
